Job Description

We are seeking an Accountant to be part of the finance team. In this role, you will prepare journal entries and financial statements, assist with financial and quarterly/annual statements, premium tax returns and other regulatory filings as well as bank reconciliation matters. We will also teach you the ins and outs of Statutory Accounting principles. SFM believes in developing and growing people because your success is our success.

Working as an Accountant, at SFM you will be part of the Finance Team providing high quality financial services to the entire organization. You will prepare journal entries and financial statements,  assist with financial and quarterly/annual statement preparation, premium tax returns and other regulatory filings as well as bank reconciliation matters. You’ll collaborate closely with internal and external business partners supporting the accounting needs of the organization.

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Prepares journal entries and financial statements in an accurate and timely manner. Reconciles general ledger balance sheet accounts to detail files.
  • Assists in the preparing annual and quarterly statements, premium tax returns, and other regulatory filings as required and ensures that the records are completed correctly and best practices are adhered to.
  • Prepares and reconciles monthly transaction report for Assigned Risk Plan.
  • Performs subsidiary billing and accounts receivable functions.
  • Collaborates with external auditors and compiles documents for the external auditors as requested. 
  • Reconciles bank accounts for assigned entities.
  • Assists in annual budget process and budget variance reports.
  • Acts as a backup in the accounts payable function as needed. 
  • Executes the control of reviewing tasks after completion by team members where assigned. Corrects or requests corrections of owner or system on identified variances.

  • Provides a high level of customer service with internal and external customers and maintains appropriate interactions with all persons.

What We'll Love About You  

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and/or finance or equivalent experience required.
  • Four plus years’ accounting experience in a finance department or auditing setting.
  • Workers’ compensation and/or property casualty insurance knowledge/experience preferred.
  • Basic familiarity with insurance accounting concepts desirable.
  • Knowledge and skills in GAAP. 
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent math and accounting skills with analytical capabilities.
  • Strong computer skills with experience working with financial spreadsheets and word processing applications, preferably MS Word and Excel, and exposure to regulatory software.
  • Ability to work independently with strong organizational skills and multi-tasking capabilities.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills in order to interact in a team environment and to collaborate with a diverse group of customers.
  • Ability to assimilate, understand and analyze information from a variety of sources.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities.
  • Ability to apply discretion and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates positive teaming skills focused on team results.
  • Must be able to be in office when needed.

Physical Requirements  

Regular attendance is required. Work takes place in a semi paperless environment within an office setting, either on business premises or other remote location, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers, which requires being stationary for extended periods of time. Will come into the office when asked to do so.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, and maintain concentration and focus. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and work with close vision. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. Work is performed indoors with little to no exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions.
