BUSINESS / MARKETING TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION


POSITION TITLE: Business / Marketing Teacher


SUPERVISES: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes... Indirectly supervises all students.


JOB GOAL: As outlined below.


QUALIFICATIONS:


1. Possess valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate.


2. Proper endorsement in appropriate teaching field.


3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable.


4. Provide own or have access to appropriate transportation to meet job requirements.


REPORTS TO: Principal at assigned school and Career and Technical Education Director


SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

JOB GOAL:

  1. To develop in each pupil an insight and understanding of industry and its place in our society; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the technical fields; to develop practical problem-solving skills related to the materials and processes of industry; to develop in each pupil skill in the safe use of tools and machines; or,
  2. To develop in each pupil an understanding of our American Business system and its place in the nation's economy; to provide knowledge needed for intelligent consumption of business services; to develop practical business skills for personal use or for use in business occupations; to encourage pupils to develop work and personal habits essential for success in business; or,
  3. To develop in each pupil an understanding coupled with the basic skills and knowledge applicable to a specific occupation in the business or public sector; and to instill in each pupil safe working habits, the importance of continuation of his education and the assets of reliability, competence, loyalty, and dependability.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Teach skills and knowledge in one or more courses in auto mechanics, drafting, electricity, electronics, woodworking, general shop to secondary pupils, utilizing courses of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities; or,
    1. Teach knowledge and skills in one or more of the following subjects to secondary pupils: Typing, shorthand, note-taking, bookkeeping, record keeping, office procedures, merchandising, business communications, data processing, or basic business. Utilize course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities; or,
    2. Teach occupational skills and knowledge to provide pupils with the competence to be an economic asset to the employer. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  2. Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law, administrative regulations, and procedures of the school district.
  3. Guide pupils in selection of appropriate elective projects or experiments.
  4. Instruct pupils in use of eye protection and safety guards, and in the use, care, and safe operation of tools, machines, and equipment.
  5. Maintain control of storage and use of school-owned property. Make minor adjustments and requests repairs to tools and equipment as required.
  6. Maintain an auditable record of pupil attendance and make daily reports.
  7. Control assigned district-owned industrial equipment and supplies to prevent loss or abuse.
  8. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the laboratory-type classroom where several kinds of activities may be taking place simultaneously.
  9. Instruct pupils in importance to employers of accuracy, neatness, efficiency, resourcefulness, and good work habits.
  10. Maintain continuous contact with the business community to keep in touch with job entry requirements and current business methods and equipment.
  11. Evaluate, select, and requisition books, instructional aids, equipment, and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records.
  12. Maintain professional competence through inservice education activities.
  13. Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  14. Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
  15. Prepare written lesson plans with appropriate objectives and utilizes appropriate state standards, guides, tasks lists, etc.
  16. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  17. Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  18. Strive to implement, by instruction and action, the district's and school's philosophy of education and instructional goals.
  19. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  20. Evaluate student progress on a regular basis.
  21. Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law policy, and administrative regulation.
  22. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  23. Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances.
  24. Attend and participate in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration. Serve on staff committees as required.
  25. Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  26. Supervise and guide youth vocational organizations as required.
  27. Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students. Provides nine week and mid-nine week progress reports as well as keeping students and parents aware of at least weekly progress.
  28. Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
  29. Provide for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. Meet at least minimum school district requirements for the annual number of inservice hours.
  30. Work with the coordinator and administration in the placement of students.
  31. Select, organize, and work with a craft committee.
  32. Make business and industry contact. (2 per month)
  33. Budget funds for equipment and supplies and keep appropriate records.
  34. Maintain and supervise use of equipment. Maintains and implements written tool control policy.
  35. Encourage and assist in implementing and teaching in Adult Vocational Education Programs when appropriate.
  36. Assist the administration with and/or supervises entry and exit of students while providing supervision of the commons area as assigned.
  37. In order to maximize student achievement, teachers should be able to assess student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives and student outcomes.
  38. Develop and implement a program of instruction that meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of students and is consistent with local and state study and curriculum guides.
  39. Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instructional/learning strategies and activities which are compatible with the physical facility but serve the needs and capabilities of the students.
  40. In order to provide a general environment conducive to the learning process, the teacher should be able to manage the behavior of learners in the classroom and participate in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school.
  41. Continually communicate to students and parents (either in writing or verbally) instructional expectations, student progress or lack of progress.
  42. Continually assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
  43. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities.
  44. Actively participate in and work with other school personnel in planning effective instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
  45. Assist in the documentation of student progress by efficiently maintaining and submitting appropriate records and reports.
  46. Ensure that the classroom and/or instructional environment is attractive, healthful, safe and generally conducive to learning.
  47. Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor or Superintendent.

  1. Good knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment of instructional specialty to which assigned.
  2. Good knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
  3. Good knowledge of the school's program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
  4. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  5. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and the needs and abilities of students.
  6. Ability to move around the room in order to monitor student work and behavior.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
  8. Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  9. Excellent human relations skills.
  10. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.
