Job Description

Primary Purpose: The Director, Federal Government Affairs is responsible, at the direction of the Senior Director, Federal Government Affairs, for designing tactics and strategy to accomplish the legislative agenda of the leadership, the Board, the Executive Committee, and the members of the Nuclear Energy Institute. Principal Duties and Responsibilities: Enhance relationships with Members of Congress, their staff and key personnel in the Administration, to improve their knowledge and understanding of commercial nuclear technology, to move them in the direction of accomplishing the goals of the nuclear industry. Direct legislative outreach efforts on specific nuclear industry priorities including existing fleet operations, new reactor incentives and tax legislation. Initiate, and actively participate in, congressional outreach to enhance NEI’s relationship with the House and Senate committees of jurisdiction central to accomplishing the goals of the nuclear industry. Prepare for congressional hearings by coordinating the preparation of testimony for NEI and industry witnesses; provide information and background to congressional staff; and prepare witnesses prior to hearing. Maintain and update NEI’s lobbying materials, including committee member and staff rosters and voting records. Coordinate the activities of NEI’s Governmental Affairs Standing Committee, which meets monthly and is comprised of NEI members’ Washington Representatives. Brief industry representatives and member company leadership on specific issues. Participate in the political process in conjunction with the NEI Federal PAC. Assist and support the Division Head by keeping them fully informed on developments and activities in assigned areas of responsibility. Contribute to the efficient and effective legislative effort to advance NEI’s goals and priorities, to enhance and promote NEI with its membership and industry groups and to add to the overall morale of the organization. Arrange meetings between NEI officials and member company representatives with Members of Congress and staff, and Administration officials. Job Specifications: Five years’ experience in working for and with the Congress, the Administration, and the business community on political and policy matters with particular emphasis on energy, tax, environment, and trade. Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of congressional and legislative processes and procedures, including tax legislation, the budgeting and authorization actions. Background in the technical aspects of nuclear-related issues is helpful. Pay Range: For employees who live in the Washington, DC Metro area, the salary range for this position is $148,880 to $223,320 annually. Typically, new hires are brought into the organization at a salary range between the minimum and midpoint, depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted salary for the role. Skills & Abilities: Strong written and oral communication abilities are essential. Consensus building skills essential. Ability to synthesize complex issues into simpler terms.
