Position Summary The Association for Iron & Steel Technology (AIST), headquartered near Pittsburgh, PA is a growing global 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with roots to 1871. We are seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Finance Manager/Controller to join our in-office team. This individual will work closely with leadership to ensure the financial sustainability and operational effectiveness of the association while supporting our global programs and mission-driven initiatives.
AIST is a leading nonprofit representing more than 18,000 members across 70+ countries, dedicated to advancing the technical development, production, and application of iron and steel. We promote knowledge-sharing, innovation, and workforce development through global conferences, training programs, scholarships, and technical publications.
This role is responsible for budgeting, financial reporting, compliance, and optimizing internal financial processes. The ideal candidate is ambitious, hard-working, and collaborative, with a positive attitude and strong communication skills. This person will serve as a key partner to senior managers, providing financial insight and operational support across the organization.
Responsibilities:
Financial Planning & Reporting
Develop annual budgets in coordination with department heads and executive leadership
Prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and dashboards
Monitor financial performance vs. budget and forecast; provide variance analysis and recommendations
Accounting & Operations
Oversee day-to-day accounting functions, including accounts payable, receivable, general ledger, and reconciliations
Maintain financial records in compliance with GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting standards
Manage fixed assets, inventory control, cash flow, and ensure accurate revenue recognition
Compliance & Audit
Ensure compliance with internal financial policies, IRS requirements (including Form 990), and nonprofit reporting standards
Coordinate annual external audit and preparation of supporting documentation
Process Improvement & Systems
Evaluate and improve financial systems, controls, and procedures to support growth and efficiency
Leverage financial software systems (currently Great Plains and iMIS) to enhance reporting and automation
Cross-Functional Support
Provide financial guidance to program and project managers regarding budgets, grants, and restricted funds
Support scholarship fund and donor accounting, preparing financial reports for funders and partners
Required Qualifications
~ Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
~10–15 years of related experience
~ Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting principles
~ Proficiency with accounting systems (e.g. Great Plains) and Microsoft Excel
~ Ability to communicate effectively
~ Some travel required
Preferred Qualifications
· CPA, MBA, or relevant nonprofit financial certification
· Experience supporting facilities management and human resources functions
· Proficiency with iMIS or other Association Management Systems
· Familiarity with international financial transactions
