The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of two main Divisions - the San Francisco Health Network and Population Health. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division uses non-clinical evidence-based policies and community partnerships to promote health, prevent disease and injury, and support sustainable environments.

The Population Health Fellows program is a public health career pathways program that provides two years of paid work and on-the-job training experience to early career professionals to launch their career in public health. With the support of an assigned mentor and staff from the Center for Learning and Innovation and Community Health Group, fellows will develop and complete a public health project in addition to receiving foundational public health and professional development training.

Upon program completion, fellows will have gained the necessary experience to meet the minimum qualifications of the health worker and health program coordinator series. Fellows who complete the data science placement will meet the minimum qualifications for Health Analyst and Epidemiologist.

The Population Health Division will host Population Health Fellows for two-year full-time public health fellowships who will receive placement in one of the following areas:

  • Community Health Equity Outreach
  • Community Health Workers/Promotores
  • Data Science
  • Environmental Health
  • HIV Capacity Building
  • Public Health Accreditation
  • Public Health Training
  • Substance Use Services
  • Tobacco Free
  • Youth LGBTQIA2+ Sexual Health Education

Job Description

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited, to the following:

  • Attend public health and professional development seminars, complete self-directed public health learning courses, and other training activities.
  • Learn and implement strategies to effectively perform public health community engagement and outreach through attending community site visits and assisting to plan community health fairs and events.
  • Assist with developing culturally appropriate health educational materials and trainings to target populations facing health disparities, especially Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. substance use, environmental health, and sexual health.
  • Support administration, evaluation, and operations of public health programs and services.
  • Develop skills in data entry and analysis to support drafting reports and assessments.

  • Black/African American Community Wellness and Health Initiative: Fellow will be housed in the Community Health Equity and Promotion Branch where they will work with Black/African American Wellness Initiative to develop and support holistic community wellness services and events in the Black/African American community.   • Community Health Equity Outreach: Fellow will be housed in the Office of Anti-Racism and Equity where they will support community outreach and engagement efforts aimed at reducing health disparities. Learn more: Office of Health Equity.
  • Community Health Workers/Promotores: Fellow will be housed in the Office of Equity and Community Engagement where they will support efforts to train and support community health workers also known as promotores.
  • Data Science: Fellow will be house in the Center for Data Science where they will gather data and assist with reports on traffic safety for Vision Zero SF.Learn more: Vision Zero SF.
  • Environmental Health: Fellow will be housed in the Public Health Services Group where they will support public health education and outreach on the cleanup of the Bayview Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. Learn more: Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.
  • HIV Capacity Building: Fellow will be housed in the Capacity Building Assistance program for HIV prevention where they will assist with developing materials and resources to provide technical assistance to community organizations and other public health departments on HIV prevention.   • Public Health Accreditation: Fellow will be housed in the Operations Branch where they will support the planning and completion of the department’s Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan; and support other operational activities.   • Public Health Training: Fellow will be housed in Center of Learning and Innovation where they will assist with developing, delivering, and assessing Population Health Division trainings. Learn more: The Center for Learning and Innovation.

  • Youth LGBTQIA2+ Sexual Health Education: Fellow will be housed in the Community Health Equity and Promotion Branch where they will work with the Youth Sexual Health Outreach Team to outreach in the LGBTQIA2+ community. Learn more: Youth United Through Health Education.


Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of high school diploma or GED


AND

  • One of the following,
    • Completion of 30 college credits OR
    • Equivalent of one year of college OR
    • One year of a workforce training certificate program OR
    • Possession of a Community Health Worker Certificate from City College of San Francisco OR
    • 6 months of employment

Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.

One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession a baccalaureate degree or masters degree in public health or related field from an accredited college or university in the United States.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to diverse communities, particularly communities of color and gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender communities and those most affected by health inequities.
  • Previous experience working, volunteering, or life experience working with communities that are highly affected by chronic illness, HIV and/ or other communicable diseases.
  • Experience and/or coursework in research methods such as focus groups, surveys, statistics, and program evaluation.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing public health or population level data.
