Job Description

Position Summary

The Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge has a very successful visitor services program that works hard to reach local, national and international audiences. Its current visitor services program staff consists of three permanent employees, seasonal staff, interns and multiple volunteers, which all work hard to produce excellent interpretation and educational experiences for all audiences. The Refuge is looking to continue its outreach program to a more multi-media and virtual based platform.

This position will assist with the inclusion of more multimedia and virtual outreach programing for the refuge and work the busy visitor center in summer.

Goals and Objectives:
•Intern will be part of a dynamic visitor service team
•Will work at visitor center providing information and orientation to visitors and develop and present in person or virtual programs
•Will successfully facilitate a variety of multimedia outreach products and virtual educational/interpretive programs

January 21, 2025 - February 1, 2026

Key Duties and Responsibilities
•Participates in the development, management, and implementation of a high quality and balanced visitor services program by recommending and implementing compatible wildlife-dependent recreation activities.
•Provides interpretation, environmental education, and recreation based programming (in person or virtual) for target audiences.
•Develop and present in person talks, walks and tidepool programs.
•Develop, present, and edit multimedia for social media and website.
•Welcome and orient visitors, open and close visitor center, provide information, and show refuge film.
•Work with refuge volunteers, Friends group, and cooperating association bookstore.
•Develop content for the refuge's website and social media streams.
•Assist with refuge events, festivals, and activities.
•Participate and assist with staff training.
•Create new interpretive content for exhibits and publications, and assist the refuge environmental education specialist with creating virtual and in person based lessons.
•Participates in the development, coordination, and implementation of site or issue specific outreach and communication.
•Identifies potential partnership activities with community organizations and corporations (Scouts, service organizations local governments and businesses).

Marginal Duties

Required Qualifications

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

Housing is provided by the host site and will likely be shared.

Compensation

Living allowance - $350/week

One-time round-trip travel allowance - $1,300

Reimbursable duty-related travel and other member expenses - $1,500

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
