Job Description and Duties

Patton State Hospital Human Resources Department is accepting applications for at least one (1) permanent, full-time appointment to the Locksmith I classification in the Facilities Operations Department. This position is under the direction of the Supervisor of Building Trade.

Locksmith I is responsible for the maintenance and repair of locks. Participates in the operation of the Locksmith Shop, helps prepare lists of materials and supplies and estimates the cost of and laying out and completing the job.  Performs skilled work as a Locksmith and other related tasks.

Candidates must have the ability to read shop drawings and work from plans and specifications; understand and carry out oral and written directions; read and write at a level appropriate to the classification. Ability to bend; reach; ascent stairs, slopes, and inclines; work at heights applicable to trade demands; and labor in the outdoors in all weather conditions.

Candidates must have the knowledge of common methods, practices, materials, and tools used in the maintenance, and repair work of a Locksmith; various tools and equipment used in the trade and repair work of a Locksmith and their proper employment and care.

Candidates must have the technical proficiency in the following:
  • Competency to install, repair and maintain cylinders and locks.
  • Competency to make or cut keys for cylinders, cabinet locks and padlocks.
  • Competency to install and repair door closures, doorknobs, and strikers.
  • Competency to install deadbolts, mortise locks and cylinders.
  • Competency to make and cut keys for cylinders and bit locks.
  • Competency to requisition supplies/materials.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Common methods, practices, materials, tools used in the maintenance, and repair work of a Locksmith; various tools and equipment used in the trade and repair work of a Locksmith and their proper employment and care.

EMPLOYEE IS REQUIRED TO:

  • Report to work on time and follow procedures for reporting absences.
  • Maintain a professional appearance.
  • Appropriately maintain cooperative, professional, and effective interactions with employees, patients/clients, and the public.
  • Comply with all Hospital policies and procedures.

Working Conditions

Patton is a forensic psychiatric hospital and was established in 1890 and opened in 1893. DSH-Patton provides treatment to forensically and civilly committed patients within a secure treatment area. The hospital does not accept voluntary admissions.

Regular and consistent attendance is critical to the successful performance of this position due to the heavy workload and time-sensitive nature of the work. The incumbent routinely works with and is exposed to sensitive and confidential issues and/or materials and is expected to always maintain confidentiality.

The Department of State Hospitals provides support services to facilities operated within the Department. A required function of this position is to consistently provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.

The employee is required to work any shift and schedule in a variety of settings and security areas throughout the hospital and may be required to work overtime and float to other work locations as determined by the operational needs of the hospital. Employee may be asked to respond to a call back for health and safety issues, after any shift and schedule, in a variety of settings throughout the Hospital in accordance with Facility Operations Call Back Procedures for BU 12 & 13 Employee and as determined by the operational needs of the Hospital.

All employees are required to have an annual health review and repeat health reviews whenever necessary to ascertain that they are free from symptoms indicating the presence of infection and can safely perform their essential job functions.
