Organizer

Based out of Everett, WA

WSCCCE Council 2 is a progressive statewide public-sector union in Washington State. It represents over 16,000 blue-collar, white-collar, professional, law enforcement, correctional staff, transit drivers, Emergency Communication/Dispatch personnel, and supervisory workers in over 180 bargaining units. We are committed to building the Union through organizing, representation, and political/community action.

The Organizer position will be headquartered out of the Council 2 Everett office working with locals across Washington and Idaho with a specific focus on building and strengthening Council 2 and its subordinate locals. The Organizer has the overall responsibilities of coordinating with the Executive Director and Staff Representatives to develop and build local union capacity; and, empowering current membership through internal and external organizing within locals. This hands-on position will work daily with shop stewards, elected local union officers, and membership. The position will be based out of the Everett Headquarters and may require extensive travel, including possible overnight stays out of town, daily driving, evening meetings, and some required weekend work.

This position has a wide range of responsibilities and is involved in assisting locals and subordinate chapters representing a variety of occupations. These groups may be spread throughout various counties and cities throughout the state of Washington and Idaho.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Understands and is proficient in all elements of the “AFSCME Organizing Model”.
  • Actively promotes the union’s vision for building strength and achieving growth to current and potential members and leaders and guides their activity on behalf of the union.
  • Identifies worker leaders, and educates and transforms them into activists, stewards, local leaders and officers.
  • Develops and leads worker mobilizations for internal and external organizing and political efforts. Will be engaged in: worksite activities, home visits, and political and legislative meetings and forums that relate to the workers’ economics and working conditions.
  • In partnership with assigned Staff Representative and local leadership, assists in duties associated with servicing and with building the local and its sub-chapters.
  • Maintains regular communication with leaders and members through local union meetings (i.e., worksite meetings at various hours, general membership and executive board), job site visits, one-on-one meetings, and house visits to maintain member rapport, monitor worker attitudes and guide their activity on behalf of the union.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

DIRECTIONS AND DECISION MAKING
This position reports to the Executive Director and the Council 2 Deputy Director. The Organizer works independently but keeps the supervisor regularly apprised of developments during organizing activities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent and 3 to 5 years of relevant organizing/servicing experience: or any combination of education and experience that provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge of labor unions and labor relations and servicing union members at a professional level.
  • Knowledge of computers and applicable software.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate work activities and keep detailed records and file reports in a timely manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with employees and members.
  • Ability to work long hours independently to accomplish the union’s objectives.
  • Ability to conduct research and gather information for negotiations, strategy development and other servicing activities.
  • Ability to develop persuasive written and graphic documents.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • A valid driver's license and driving record acceptable to the employer, a working automobile, a personal credit card, and auto insurance are required and must be maintained during employment. A criminal background and/or credit check may be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (as required by ADA)
Work is performed in various employment settings, including workers’ homes, neighborhoods, worksites, county and municipal government forums, and events. Driving, travel, temporary assignments, and extended work hours may be required. A valid driver’s license is required.

Compensation
A collective bargaining agreement sets the salary, and the starting range is between $76,812 to $81,492 per year, which will be determined commensurate with experience. The top of the pay scale for the position, with seniority, is $117,065. This position offers a robust package of additional benefits, including health, dental, vision, life insurance, long-term disability, sick leave, vacation leave, paid holidays, 401K retirement plan, and pension plan (in which employer and employee contributions are a percentage of your salary).
