The National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) advances human rights and due process for immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers through direct legal services, impact litigation, advocacy, and public education. Headquartered in Chicago with offices in Washington, DC, Indiana, and San Diego, NIJC's team of 100 attorneys, paralegals, and professionals, along with 2,000 pro bono attorneys, is at the forefront of immigration reform.

Job Summary :

The LGBTQ Immigrant Rights Initiative offers legal services to low-income immigrants who identify as LGBTQ or who are living with HIV. NIJC relies on our robust network of over 2,000 active pro bono attorneys to expand access to immigration legal representation for people in our service area. The LGBTQ Project Pro Bono Coordinator serves as the LGBTQ Project's liaison to pro bono attorneys, law firms, staff, and advocacy organizations. The coordinator leads outreach efforts, supports case oversight, handles administrative support for cases placed with pro bono attorneys, and stays current on immigration and refugee law in partnership with the supervising attorney.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain and update country conditions packets
  • Draft applications, affidavits, letters and/or legal pleadings and prepare supporting documentation
  • Correspond with non-local detainees
  • Coordinate NIJC's response to detention conditions concerns for LGBTQ detainees
  • Facilitate pro bono placement process for LGBTQ project cases
  • Oversee project intake process, including conducting intakes
  • Ensure the accuracy, substance, and timeliness of statistical and narrative reports, projects, schedules, and other relevant work products
  • Review, analyze and present cases to supervisor
  • Report on project outcomes and trends
  • Conducts regular monitoring of pending cases
  • Provides administrative support for cases before, during, and after placement with pro bono attorneys
  • Maintain client files and oversee accuracy of database information
  • Organize NIJC's LGBTQ community outreach efforts
  • Remain current knowledge of immigration policies, procedures, and internal structures
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least two years of experience in immigration, legal, and/or human rights work. May give credit towards years of experience if attained a degree higher than a bachelor's degree.

Language & Communication Skills:

  • Fluency in English and either Spanish or French
  • Additional non-English language skills are preferred
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external audiences. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated competency in public speaking and strong interpersonal skills

Additional Skills:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 or related software
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Skills in project management and outcomes measurement highly desirable
