Department Details
A busy 40-bed Level IV NICU. Conditions of the infants can include prematurity, sepsis, respiratory distress, surgical emergencies, birth-related trauma and other medical conditions. Sanford Children’s NICU offers an advanced level of equipment and capabilities not found at every NICU, including synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation, sophisticated pulmonary functioning testing, high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, and whole-body cooling. The air/ground flight team that functions out of NICU brings in approximately 30% of the infants admitted to the NICU.
Staff Mix: Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Neonatologists, RNs, Patient Care Techs & Formula Technicians.
Our specially trained flight nurses, APPs and Respiratory Therapists provide transport services from North Dakota, northern South Dakota, and western Minnesota. Respiratory therapists always staff the NICU, providing respiratory care and direct patient care. Neonatal Nurse Practitioners are on site 24/7.

Qualifications
Graduate from an accredited nursing program required, including, but not limited to, American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), and National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). Bachelor’s Degree in nursing preferred.
Currently holds an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where the practice of nursing is occurring and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state. Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications.
