Job Description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states. The Waymo Policy and Government Affairs team has a front seat in this exciting moment in the evolution of autonomous driving technology, transportation and tech policy. Successful navigation of the policy landscape is critically important to deploying and scaling our business. Our team works directly with policymakers and third-party groups at the national, state and local levels to help advance transportation policy, educate on the safety benefits of the technology, and advance consumer awareness and acceptance. Internally, our efforts support the innovative work of engineering, product, strategy, and partnerships teams, and we work closely with highly-skilled legal and safety experts. You will be based hybrid on-site in the Washington D.C. area and report into our Head of Federal Policy and Government Affairs. You will: Under the direction of the Head of Federal Policy and Government Affairs, create and execute federal lobbying strategies that advance Waymo's policy positions, with a particular focus on the executive branch. Build relationships with officials at the U.S. Department of Transportation, the White House, and other federal agencies, and with other important external stakeholders. Articulate a compelling vision for the value of autonomous driving, Waymo's leadership role in the industry, and the federal policies needed to support these priorities. Develop subject matter expertise in important policy areas, as determined. Manage consultants and drive engagement with trade associations and relevant third parties. Coordinate and collaborate with other members of the Waymo Policy team and other internal cross-functional business partners. You have: Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of relevant federal government or government affairs experience, including 4+ years of experience in the private sector lobbying executive branch agencies. Significant firsthand experience with how major regulatory and policy initiatives are developed, adopted, and implemented by executive branch agencies and the White House. Demonstrated track record of lobbying success (e.g., regulatory wins, productive relationships with top officials, successfully shaping executive branch activity, etc.). Strong relationships with active Republican officials and policymakers and other key right-of-center policy stakeholders. Experience working on regulatory issues facing highly-regulated industries. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Ability to travel, approximately 1 or 2 trips a month. We prefer: Passionate and knowledgeable about emerging technology and related public policy. Experience with building broad support for complex policy positions and overcoming political obstacles. Knowledge of the policy and regulatory environment surrounding autonomous passenger and commercial vehicles. Knowledge of artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, advanced computing, trade policy, and other public policy issues related to cutting-edge technology. Enthusiasm for understanding and describing complex technical matters and their implications for public policy. Ability to take initiative and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment. The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for the role location or, if the role can be performed remote, the specific salary range for your preferred location, during the hiring process. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in Waymo’s discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous Company benefits program, subject to eligibility requirements. Salary Range: $204,000 — $259,000 USD #J-18808-Ljbffr Waymo
