Job Description

The Berkeley Lab is hiring an Accelerator Electronics Engineer to manage, maintain, and improve the electronics systems for the 88” cyclotron. This role involves working on high-voltage systems, power applications, control interfaces, RF generation, and beam diagnostics. The engineer will also be a key contact for electrical safety compliance. This position requires a proactive, self-motivated individual who can work under general guidance and collaborate with senior engineers. The engineer will support the cyclotron operations team and work closely with the lead electronics engineer on project needs and priorities. What You Will Do: Analyzes moderate-scope problems, considering various factors to determine appropriate action. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices. Builds productive internal/external relationships. Contributes to new concepts, projects, and upgrades. Develops and refines test and operational procedures to meet physics and engineering needs. Evaluates designs for performance and reliability. Actively participates in design reviews to ensure project success. Designs and develops accelerator components (e.g., RF systems, beam instrumentation, control systems). Implements innovative solutions to meet operational needs and integrates complex systems. Follows safety protocols and promotes a culture of safety awareness. Assists in maintaining inventory of critical components and equipment for ongoing and future projects. What is Required: Level 2: Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of related experience, or an advanced degree, or equivalent work experience. Strong knowledge of analog/digital electronics design, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Experience with high-voltage power supplies, RF systems, and beam diagnostics. Hands-on experience with test equipment (oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, power supplies, multimeters). Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills for diagnosing complex systems. Excellent communication skills for documentation, reports, and collaboration. Applies engineering concepts and company policies to resolve issues. Proficient in electronics engineering concepts, design, and technical documentation. Experience with Electrical CAD tools (KiCad, Cadence/OrCAD, Altium, Siemens EDA, etc.). Able to obtain LBNL QEW2 qualification. In Addition to the Above, Level 3: Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of related experience, 3 years with a Master's, or equivalent work experience. Professional knowledge in analog/digital electronics design, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Expert in electronics engineering concepts, design, and technical documentation. Desired Qualifications: Familiar with high-frequency electronics or RF accelerator components. Experience with safety systems for high-power or high-voltage electronics. Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field. Notes: This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay. The expected salary range for the Level 2 position is $111,000.00 - $136,000.00 annually, which fits into the full salary range of $98,904.00 - $166,932.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience. The expected salary range for the Level 3 position is $132,000.00 - $162,000.00 annually, which fits into the full salary range of $117,660.00 - $198,516.00 annually depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
