Under the supervision of the Senior Associate Athletic Director, Performance, Health & Wellness, the Director of Olympic Sports Nutrition provides individual and group/team nutrition counseling and education to enhance the performance of all Olympic sports student-athletes, on-site and during travel. Primary responsibilities include counseling student-athletes and groups on daily nutrition for performance and health, translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations, tracking and documenting outcomes of nutrition services, serving as a food and nutrition resource for coaches, trainers, and parents, providing sports nutrition education for health/wellness programs for Olympic sports, oversight of administrative, budgetary, operations, and personnel, and maintaining professional competency and skills required for professional practice.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Individual nutrition counseling for Olympic sports student-athletes.
  • Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance (intake and expenditure) of student-athletes in the context of athletic performance and health.
  • Counsel student-athletes on optimal nutrition for exercise training (match nutrition to training phases and goals), competition, recovering from exercise, safe weight management, proper hydration, immune system health, disordered eating, travel, and supplementation.
  • Counsel student-athletes on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with good health and good performance.
  • Provide personalized meal and snack recommendations to promote achieving short- and long-term goals for athletic performance and good health. Develop and counsel stakeholders in hydration protocols.
  • Address nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, and iron-deficiency anemia.
  • Provide medical nutrition therapy, as needed, to help manage or treat medical conditions.
  • Counsel athletes on optimal nutrition for recovery from illness or injury.
  • Coordinate nutritional care as a member of multidisciplinary sports medical/sports science teams.
  • Liaison with in- and out-patient programs for conditions such as disordered eating.
  • Evaluate nutritional supplements for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy, monitors use of appropriate supplementation.
  • Collaborate with the individual’s family, physician, coach, and other health professionals, as appropriate.
  • Develop resources to support educational efforts.
  • Educate in food selection and food preparation.
  • Document nutrition services provided and evaluate the effectiveness of nutrition strategies towards meeting desired outcomes using the Nutrition Care Process.
  • Educate and mentor dietetic interns and others as appropriate.
  • Develop and oversee nutrition policies and procedures.
  • Provide service line administrative oversight of the budget, finances, operations, and personnel.

Food Service and Menu Development

  • May oversee the management all Olympic sport nutrition facilities.
  • Coordinate with athletics business office and Olympic sport administrator(s) as needed.
  • Order inventory and distribute products.
  • May coordinate with facilities maintenance and daily upkeep of the Olympic sport nutrition facilities.
  • Supervise and schedule staff and students for the Olympic sport nutrition facilities.
  • Coordinate/manage quantity food production and distribution.
  • May coordinate nutrition for domestic and/or international travel.
  • Manage budgets for purchasing and distribution of nutritional supplements.
  • Develop and deliver nutrition education for food service personnel.

Nutrition Education for Teams, Groups, or Wellness Programs

  • Develop and deliver nutrition education presentations on various topics related to nutrition for performance.
  • Plan menus for training table and team travel.
  • Provide individual nutrition counseling as needed.
  • Serve as a nutrition resource for coaches, healthcare providers, food service personnel, and parents.

Professional Development

  • Maintain dietetic registration and continuing education requirements.
  • Develop and implement an individualized portfolio plan for professional growth.
  • Stay abreast of current food, nutrition, and health issues and research related to sports nutrition.
  • Formulate and implement performance improvement programs.
  • Establish and continuously assess the effectiveness of the internal controls within the unit.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Certification and Licensing:

  • Registered Dietitian with active registration preferred; Certification/Licensure as required by state of practice preferred. Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) preferred.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in clinical nutrition, food and nutrition, or related area is required. Master’s degree in Nutrition or Exercise Physiology and a minimum of two years’ experience in nutrition counseling, preferably with emphasis on sports nutrition.
  • Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and counseling skills.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent time management, organizational, and record-keeping skills.
  • Knowledge of NCAA and ACC rules and regulations.
