Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Countryway Insurance, a Virginia Farm Bureau Company, is seeking an experienced Farm Underwriter to join our Underwriting Department. This position is responsible for creating positive long term agency relationships that result in sustained profitable growth, which is achieved through proper risk selection using established guidelines and adhering to sound desk and territory management techniques.

LOCATION

West Creek Office (Goochland County, VA - Richmond, VA)

This position is based out of our beautiful West Creek Office location.

POSITION

Full time (37.5 hours per week) - Salaried Position with Benefits

Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm, Hybrid work schedule is offered, after an in-office training period.

PRIMARY DUTIES
  • Accept, modify, or reject risks according to assigned authority limits.
  • Evaluate accounts for continued acceptability.
  • Review contracts and requests for coverage changes.
  • Communicate decisions to agents.
  • Review new business and changes to existing business.
  • Assist Agents and Claims with coverage questions.
  • Communicate by phone or in writing with company agents and policy holders.
  • Conduct Agent visitations and training as needed.
  • Review and analyze underwriting information sources: MVR's, Score, CLUE, etc.
  • Keep management and assigned agents informed regarding rulings, legal interpretations, and new legislation which affects future or current policies and procedures.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Agent Visitations and training as needed.
  • Develop and deliver educational presentations for agents and underwriters.
  • Maintain a high degree of expertise in all farm lines of business.
  • Perform all other duties as required or requested.
  • Keeps management informed verbally and in writing of activities and problems within assigned area of responsibility; refers to matters beyond limits of authority and/or expertise to manager for direction.
  • Follow and meets all established processing timeframes and division of authority grants.
  • Manages and prioritizes workloads so that all major responsibilities will be complete accurately and in a timely manner.
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Requires successful completion of or working towards completion of IIA, AIC, API, CPCU, or equivalent.
  • Requires the ability to participate in available education courses and training programs offered within company and through outside sources.
  • Minimum 3 years of Property & Casualty Underwriting experience.
MINIMUM SKILL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Proven decision-making ability.
  • High level of initiative and motivation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong team orientation.
  • Excellent planning, negotiation and organizational skills.
  • Effectively utilize computer systems to perform essential job functions, including MS office.
  • Ability to perform consistently and effectively, and to adapt to changing environments.
  • Ability to work the necessary time needed to prioritize and complete assignments, while adhering to sound work ethic and proper desk and time management techniques.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Prior Farm Underwriting experience.
  • Insurance designations.
  • Prior Underwriting experience in a Multi-State, Multi-Lines environment. working with Independent Agents.
