Monitor all County Council meetings, summarizing each legislative day and workshop. Conduct policy and legislative research; compile and analyze information. Assist in managing relationships with municipal officials, advocates, and external partners. Aid the Director in developing advocacy materials for legislative priorities. Attend County and municipal government meetings on behalf of the County Executive. Identify relevant government issues and trends; analyze proposed local legislation and its impact. Organize the Quarterly County Executive/Mayors/Burgesses Meeting. Provide information and assistance regarding Government Relations programs; recommend corrective actions to the Director. Summarize proposed legislation and its effects on current law and policy implications. Represent the GR Team in project oversight and meetings related to the legislative process. Monitor County workgroups, boards, and commissions; inform the Director of relevant agenda items. Support the Director in managing relationships with advocates and external partners. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications and Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Government, Political Science, Public Policy, or a related field. Some experience (paid, unpaid internships, or volunteer) in governmental relations or the legislative process. Beginner proficiency in Microsoft 365. Valid automobile operator’s license. A combination of education and experience may be considered toward the overall requirements. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Maintain County Authorized Driver privileges. Accurately compile, analyze, and prepare statistical data and reports. Stay current on legislative trends through independent research. Strong clerical, record‑keeping, and basic math/financial skills. Handle sensitive information with confidentiality and good judgment. Critical thinking to analyze data, trends, and patterns. Proficient in Microsoft 365, e‑mail, spreadsheets, and related systems. Organize work, set priorities, and make decisions under minimal supervision. Extensive knowledge of local, state, and federal government organization and legislative processes. Legal research and analysis skills for developing legislation. Clear spoken and written English communication skills. Establish and maintain effective relationships with elected officials, boards, community groups, and the public. Preference May Be Given For Experience in local or state government. Drafting legislative briefings. Preparing testimony for elected officials. Conducting legislative or policy research. Liaising with elected officials. Physical Requirements / Working Conditions Frequent sitting, walking, and driving; occasional lifting up to 20 pounds, pushing up to 40 pounds; repetitive motions; rare climbing. Indoor work predominates; rare outdoor work on uneven ground. Additional Information / Examination Process Available for varied evening and weekend work hours.
