Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join Dr. Xiao Yang's laboratory. The role involves cell culture, stem cell research, brain organoid maintenance, bioelectronic device fabrication, data analysis, and lab equipment maintenance. The candidate will also provide technical support and assist with lab management responsibilities, such as ordering and managing lab supplies. This position offers opportunities to contribute to exciting interdisciplinary research and collaborate with multiple centers, including the Center for Microphysiological Systems and the Translational Tissue Engineering Center. The position is located at the East Baltimore Campus, with occasional travel to the Homewood Campus. Specific Duties & Responsibilities Perform iPSC cell culture and generate and maintain brain organoids. Maintain routine laboratory tasks including autoclaving, chemical waste and biohazard disposal, computer maintenance, and data backup. Coordinate and manage lab equipment (biosafety cabinets, centrifuges, incubators, freezers, microscopes). Serve as a liaison for lab equipment service engineers for troubleshooting and maintenance. Order and restock laboratory supplies as necessary. Teach experimental techniques and basic laboratory procedures to students, postdocs, and technicians. Generate figures for manuscripts and grant applications. Attend lab meetings and present updates on research progress. Design and microfabrication of bioelectronic devices. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned. Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or graduation equivalent with some science coursework. Certificate from technical institute or internship experience preferred. Training Certificate from Technical Institute preferred. Preferred Qualifications B.S. in biomedical engineering, neuroscience, electrical engineering, or a related field. Experience in one or more of the following areas: (1) Flexible devices and device nano/microfabrication. (2) Organoids, stem cells, and tissue culture. (3) Animal work and rodent surgeries. (4) Tissue engineering, particularly related to biomaterials, hydrogels, bioprinting, and microfluidics. Two or more years of undergraduate research experience in a similar laboratory setting. Post-undergraduate work experience is preferred.
