The Institute for the Study of the Ancient World at NYU (ISAW) is a center for interdisciplinary research and graduate education on antiquity in Eurasia and Africa. ISAW is also committed to making the results of this work accessible through public lectures, outreach activities, and exhibitions. The exhibitions are a visual manifestation of the ISAW mission and form a crucial link between the work carried out in ISAW and the wider public. The exhibitions program is an integral part of ISAW's mission.
ISAW does not have collections of its own. Its exhibitions depend on loans from museums and other partners in the US and overseas.
The Bernard and Lisa Selz Director of Exhibitions and Gallery Curator (the Exhibitions Director) is responsible for curating exhibitions and organizing an outward facing program of events associated with each. Integral to this is building relationships with lending institutions and academic and curatorial colleagues in the US and overseas. The Exhibitions Director manages a small but highly skilled staff, and works closely with other members of ISAW, including those responsible for finance, the building, digital projects, development, and events. A key part of the role is working with and training graduate students. They will be supported by an Exhibitions Committee on which faculty, staff, and students will be represented.
