This summer, both Pinterest and Instagram are rolling out new features to streamline and enhance the way e-commerce is conducted on their respective platforms. Businesses that have been using Pinterest and Instagram to showcase their products and services will now be able to optimize use of these applications to advertise products and brands.

With the introduction of Buyable Pins, Pinterest is closing the gap between “want” and “have” for its users; pinners can now buy products directly from the Pinterest app if the price sticker on a pin is blue. Buyable Pins will allow smaller businesses to use this social media channel as an extension of their storefronts and as a way to introduce their brands to consumers who wouldn’t have found them otherwise.

Instagram is also working on connecting people to their favorite local stores and restaurants as well as globally recognized brands. Previously, retailers’ use of Instagram focused on growing brand loyalty rather than increasing sales. Now, advertisers and businesses of all sizes will be able to target consumers in more effective, relevant ways with clickable links that drive traffic directly to their websites.

The change will be in the form of a new “action-oriented” layout that features “Learn More”, “Shop Now”, “Install Now”, and “Sign Up” buttons below images, making Instagram marketing clickable for the first time.

Both Pinterest and Instagram are evolving into more intuitive marketing platforms and are leveraging their capabilities to allow advertisers to effectively drive traffic, awareness, and sales in real time. The updates, set to unveil in the coming weeks, are making marketing and sales through social media more impactful.
